Description

Bērzaune parish is home to Gaiziņkalns, the highest peak in Latvia - one of the most popular places for active recreation, tourism and winter sports. The outstanding natural landscapes of Gaiziņkalns' surroundings are one of the greatest values in all seasons. There are many small, picturesque lakes in the area - Brenceni lake, Krustins, Deklainis, Grivas lake, Zobacins, Virkstenis, Zautritis, Bumbieritis, Talejas lake and part of Kanepena lake, from which small rivers flow - Berzaune, Taleja, Lacite, Savite and others. There are two villages in the parish - Bērzaune and Sauleskalns. The territory of the parish is crossed by highways Madona-Pļaviņas, Madona-Ergli, Madona-Gaiziņkalns and a network of local roads. The distance to the county center Madona is 13 km. The surroundings of the current Bērzaune have been inhabited since the early Iron Age. This is evidenced by the numerous archaeological finds and 14 ancient graves and burial mounds located in the territory of the parish. It is thought that before the construction of the Bērzaune walled castle, the most important settlement was the settlement on Mount Arona.
